DR. EMILY WANG

Dr. Emily Wang began her career as a Licensed Psychologist in the United States in 1993 and returned to Alberta in 1998. She is an Associate Member of the Mathison Centre for Mental Health Research and Education, and the Hotchkiss Brain Institute, a member of the National Register of Health Service Providers, a member of the National Early Relational Health Network, and a Member of the Psychologist’s Association of Alberta where she was named Psychologist of the Year in 2023.

As an early adopter of the Neurosequential Model of Therapeutics, Dr. Wang was instrumental in the province’s shift towards a trauma informed, brain based understanding of mental health treatment. She was responsible for the provincial training of the Neurosequential Model (NM) concepts and implementation in Alberta from April 2017-October 2018 when the Ministry of Children’s Services deemed the NM the model of practice for caregivers.  More recently, as a Senior Director at Hull Services, she is the lead in the Ministry’s move towards the NMT as their model of practice in congregate care settings.

Dr. Wang is a specialist in the treatment of trauma as well as in Infant Mental Health. She is acknowledged by the Neurosequential Network as having completed her Neurosequential Model of Therapeutics (NMT) Training Certification through the Phase III/Mentor level.  In her push towards a more preventative focus, she delved into the Brazelton Touchpoints Center model to learn more about supporting professionals in forming strength-based partnerships with families with young children.  She was instrumental in developing Hull Services as Alberta’s first Touchpoints Training Site, and became a Touchpoints trainer herself.

Dr. Wang has trained professionals on the impact of trauma on the brain and on leadership and organizational health and wellness.  She has extensive experience working collaboratively in school based settings and larger organizational settings, including non profit organizations and government.  She finds great fulfillment in teaching the next generation of professionals: she is an Adjunct Lecturer at Cumming School of Medicine, (Psychiatry), a Sessional Instructor (Social Work) at the University of Calgary and a faculty member of the Infant Mental Health Fellowship (UC Davis, CPE).  She is a current board member with the YW Calgary.  Dr. Wang is the 2020 recipient of the University of California, Davis Continuing and Professional Education- Parent-Infant and Child Institute “Bruce D. Perry, Spirit of the Child Award” and the 2023 recipient of the Psychologist of the Year from the Psychologist’s Association of Alberta.
